Message from the Director

Greetings from the Director of the Center for Gender Studies Professor Shin Hye-bong Faculty of Law

Our university has decided to open the "Schoonmaker Memorial Center for Gender Studies Aoyama Gakuin University." Schoonmaker is named after a missionary who opened a girls' elementary school during the Meiji period, one of the origins of Aoyama. The center aims to carry on the research conducted at Aoyama Gakuin Women's Junior College Women's Junior College, to carry on Aoyama 's tradition of educating women into a new era, and to contribute to gender equality and respect for sexual diversity Aoyama and in society through the development of gender research and education.

As the Olympic Charter and the Code of Ethics clearly state that treaties on human rights protection are respected and any discrimination is rejected, anti-discrimination is the most fundamental principle of international human rights standards. However, gender discrimination remains deeply rooted in society, and Japan in particular is lagging far behind in terms of the ratio of women in politics, the ratio of women in senior positions, and the wage gap between men and women. If half of the population is women, but only men make decisions, we cannot create a society that meets people's needs. In order to create a society where people can live and demonstrate their abilities regardless of gender, it is essential to pay attention to gender issues, that is, sexual issues in social and cultural contexts. In addition, people's sexual orientations and gender identities are diverse, and this diversity must be valued.

The gender perspective is related to many academic fields, including literature, law, politics, and economics, and we believe that the establishment of this center at our university is of great significance. We would appreciate your support so that the center can continue to carry out its useful activities.
