Language proficiency and academic performance (GPA) required for application eligibility
The qualifications required for applying to study at partner and accredited universities are academic performance (GPA) and scores on language proficiency tests such as TOEFL iBT and IELTS. However, depending on the university, a language proficiency certificate issued by a language instructor at our university may be accepted in place of a language proficiency test. Since the application qualifications must be met before applying, sufficient preparation is required.
Language Ability
The language ability requirements for application are the minimum required for the destination. The required language ability varies depending on the destination, but since you will be living and taking specialized subjects in the local language, academic language ability is essential in addition to daily conversation. Sufficient language ability will facilitate smooth communication with those around you, making your study abroad experience more fulfilling and fruitful. In addition, it can sometimes be a necessary means of self-protection, so it is necessary to make sufficient preparations to improve your language ability before traveling. Please note that the TOEFL iBT and IELTS scores to be submitted when applying to study abroad at our university must be taken within one year prior to the internal application.
TOEFL iBT
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an international standard English proficiency test administered to people whose native language is not English, and is a required test for students who wish to study abroad at universities in English-speaking countries. TOEFL iBT is taken on a computer, with each person assigned a computer at the test center. For details and the latest information, please check the CIEE Japan Representative Office website.
IELTS
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an English proficiency test that universities, higher education institutions, and further education institutions in English-speaking countries require applicants to submit scores. While TOEFL iBT is entirely computer-based, you can choose to take either a paper-based or computer-based test. However, all speaking tests are conducted in a face-to-face format. Please note that some of our UK partner universities may require the IELTS for UKVI test.
Languages other than English
If you wish to study abroad in a non-English-speaking country, some partner universities may require you to achieve a certain level of success in the language proficiency test of that country in addition to the language proficiency certificate. Please check the application qualifications for details.
● Language Proficiency Certificate: A certificate that proves that you have the language proficiency to understand classes in a second foreign language based on the evaluation of a language instructor at our university.
[Even if you are not an English-speaking country, we have partner universities where you can take classes in English]
English-speaking countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom are not the only options for study abroad destinations. Some partner universities offer classes in English in non-English-speaking countries. This should be a valuable opportunity to come into contact with and learn multiple languages in one study abroad. When considering where to study abroad, why not take a fresh look at non-English-speaking countries?
Academic performance (GPA)
GPA refers to the average grade per credit of a student's registered courses, and is calculated using the following method using Grade Points given according to the grade evaluation stage. The GPA used at the time of application will be the value calculated at the end of the academic year for applicants departing in the early semester, and at the end of the first semester of the year (including the evaluation of courses completed in the early semester) for applicants departing in the late semester. For grades, please check the "Grade Report" (not a transcript) on the student portal.
*For School of Social Informatics, teacher training course subjects are not included in the GPA calculation.
* "Information Skills I" and designated overseas training are not included in the GPA calculation.
