Komoda Advanced Academic Scholarship and Komoda Advanced Academic Award

In accordance with the bequest of the late Professor Emeritus Toshiya Komoda of Tohoku University, the "Aoyama Scholarship for Advanced Academic Studies" and the " Scholarship for Advanced Academic Studies" have been established to provide academic encouragement and financial support to students at Tohoku University Graduate School Graduate School of Science and Engineering who are responsible for education and research in the next generation of science and engineering.

Komada Advanced Academic Scholarship

  • Candidate Qualifications

    Candidates must be students in the Doctoral Program Graduate School of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the "Doctoral Program"), or individuals who have been admitted to the Doctoral Program in April of the following year and have completed the enrollment procedures, and who meet any of the following criteria:

    1) Students who are extremely excellent in both academic performance and character, who are capable of independently conducting excellent research, and who are expected to succeed in the doctoral program.

    2) Those who fall under the category of those listed above and are having difficulty paying tuition fees for financial reasons.
    Those who meet the criteria set forth in the preceding paragraph but are employed by a government agency, company, etc. and receive a salary will not be considered for selection. However, those approved by the Graduate School Chief Meeting may be considered for selection.

  • Number of candidates

    In principle, the number of candidates to be selected each year will be up to two. However, taking into consideration the qualifications of the candidates, more than two candidates may be selected in any given year.

  • Scholarship amount and payment period

    In principle, the scholarship will be paid in a lump sum of 520,000 yen per year per student. However, the amount of the grant will be adjusted each year depending on the investment interest rate and dividend amount of the fund. The scholarship will be paid during the period of enrollment in the doctoral program (excluding periods of leave of absence), up to a total of three years.

  • Candidate Selection

    Candidates will be selected by the Faculty Council Graduate School of Science and Engineering.

  • Overlapping Scholarships

    Students who receive this scholarship may also receive other grant or loan scholarships.

  • Returning scholarships

    If a student who receives this scholarship withdraws during the year in which the scholarship is received, he/she will be obligated to return the amount. If a student withdraws after enrolling in the year in which the scholarship is received, there will be no obligation to return the amount.

Komoda Advanced Academic Award

  • Candidates

    Candidates must be students enrolled in the Master's Program Graduate School of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the "Master's Program") who meet all of the following criteria.

    1) Those who are extremely excellent in both academic performance and character and who have confirmed completion of their master's degree program.
    2) Those whose dissertations or other research papers are exceptionally excellent.

  • Number of candidates

    In principle, the number of candidates to be selected in a given fiscal year will be up to eight. However, more than eight candidates may be selected in consideration of the qualifications of the candidates.

  • Award type, amount and award period

    Each award will consist of a certificate and a prize of 30,000 yen, and the period of the award will be limited to the year of adoption.

  • Candidate Selection

    Candidates will be selected by the Faculty Council Graduate School of Science and Engineering.
