International Communication Major
International Communication Major
The goal of Department of International Communication is to equip students with the theories and applied skills on language, culture, and communication necessary to understand various international phenomena.
Master's Program
This major has three pillars: linguistics, regional and comparative culture, and communication. With regard to language, students will learn the basics of language functions and structures. With regard to cultures closely related to language, students will be able to conduct regional and comparative cultural research in a variety of areas, including Europe, Asia, and America. In addition, students will learn theories in areas such as international communication, intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, and multicultural coexistence.
This department has three main features. First, the curriculum is linked to other departments, so students can organically study research themes from both micro and macro perspectives. Second, it offers a wide range of courses, particularly in the areas of research methods, and offers a wide variety of theoretical and empirical research. Third, it offers a wide range of support for writing papers, including courses on planning research topics and writing expressions.
This major is not only for regular students, but also for many people working at the forefront of companies, government agencies, language education, mass media, development aid, interpretation and translation, and international cooperation. After graduating, many students utilize their advanced expertise in the workplace, or become teachers at university or junior college level.
Doctoral Program
The Doctoral Program Department of International Communication offers students who have completed a Master's degree in a related field the opportunity to further develop their research skills and academic knowledge.
This program emphasizes the theoretical rather than the practical aspects of international communication. Therefore, students are expected to delve deeper into each of the fields of linguistics (language science, sociolinguistics, etc.), regional and comparative culture, and communication studies (international, intercultural, interpersonal) based on their master's degree research. To date, 15 students have earned doctorates from this program.
