Graduate School of Literature Features

the purpose

Graduate School of Literature aims to nurture graduate students who have a high level of expertise and can contribute broadly to society through research guidance that leads to the writing of master's and doctoral dissertations in line with the objectives of each major.

Features

Graduate School of Literature consists of five majors: Department of English and American Literature, Department of French Literature and Language, Department of Japanese Literature and Language, Department of History, and Department of Comparative Arts. All of these majors share the same roots in the tradition of the humanities, which gives Graduate School of Literature a distinct character. Each major is further divided into smaller areas based on the specific research subject. For example, in the literature major, the division is between the study of literature, culture, and thought and the study of language. In all areas, students can share cutting-edge research activities with leading researchers who innovate their research subjects and methods while conducting advanced research.

Mutually enlightening learning and research activities and their support

Graduate School of Literature places emphasis on students' independent and mutually edifying learning and research activities. To that end, all departments have academic societies whose members are faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students, which publish research journals and newsletters, and hold lectures, conventions, and study groups. Graduate students play a key role in running and implementing these organizations. Some academic societies provide support, such as subsidizing travel expenses for presentations at national-scale conferences. In addition, the Graduate School has agreements with similar departments at major private universities in the Tokyo metropolitan area, centering on credit transfer, which not only allows students to receive guidance from excellent researchers at other graduate schools, but also provides an environment in which students from other graduate schools can hone their skills together.

Always looking for a new career

In recent years, Graduate School of Literature has seen a steady increase in the number of students receiving doctoral degrees. This is a sign that the research of graduate students is steadily bearing fruit, and also proof that young graduate students are indeed taking their first steps towards a career as a researcher from this graduate school. At the same time, to welcome those who have already built up a career in society and wish to pursue a new career, Graduate School of Literature has established a system of working adult entrance examinations for the master's program in several majors (Department of English and American Literature, Department of Japanese Literature and Language, and Department of History), and Department of English and American Literature offers day and evening classes.
