Learn about exchange programs at partner universities

Studying abroad at a partner university is a study abroad program under which students are sent to and accepted from universities with which our university has concluded a mutual student exchange agreement. Students are selected by the university through document review and interviews, and become study abroad candidates after approval by the university. However, being selected as a study abroad candidate means that the student is recommended as a candidate to the partner university, and does not guarantee that the student will be accepted at the host university. (Depending on the circumstances of the host university, acceptance may not be permitted.) Application documents are sent to the partner university through our university, and the study abroad is confirmed when the partner university grants admission.

Our university has always been based on Christian principles and has an educational philosophy of "educating individuals who have a correct understanding based on a global perspective and the wisdom and power to discover and solve problems on their own." The purpose of this study abroad program is to "educate individuals who can understand and interact with others in international political, economic, and cultural activities, and who can contribute to the resolution of international conflicts and various global issues."

Purpose of study abroad, study abroad schedule

The most important thing when considering studying abroad is to clarify your motivation and purpose. By clarifying your motivation and purpose, you can consider a study abroad program that is suitable for you and lead to a fulfilling life abroad. Study abroad programs are becoming more diverse along with the purpose of studying abroad, such as wanting to master a foreign language, deepening knowledge in a specialized field, or broadening your international perspective. After carefully considering the study abroad destination (region/country), time and duration of study abroad, the academic subject you want to study, and your career path after graduation, please carefully consider what type of study abroad program will be most effective for you.

Types of exchange programs

Study Abroad at Partner Universities (Exchange Programs)

This is a study abroad program under the "exchange program" in which students are sent to universities that have concluded a mutual student exchange agreement with Aoyama Gakuin. Under this program, the period of study abroad is counted toward the period of enrollment at Aoyama Gakuin, so if the credits earned at the host university are recognized as graduation requirements, it is possible to graduate in four years depending on the year of study abroad. In addition, by paying tuition fees to Aogaku, tuition fees at the host university are generally waived (excluding miscellaneous expenses, etc.). Exchange students are selected through a document review and interview, and then approved by the university.
Our goal is not only to improve students' language skills through the study abroad experience, but also to hone their intercultural understanding, communication skills, leadership, teamwork, and initiative, so that they can become truly international people who can thrive in the global society.
In addition, during their study abroad, outbound exchange students are expected to earn the equivalent of at least 12 credits (approximately 135 hours) per semester if they are undergraduate students, and at least 9 credits (approximately 102 hours) per semester if they are graduate students.

Study abroad at partner universities (privately funded)

This is a system where students study abroad at their own expense at a partner university. This system is implemented at some partner universities in the United States, France, and New Zealand, and students are required to pay tuition fees to both our university and the partner university. Applications are processed through the International Center. As with exchange programs, the study abroad period is counted toward the period of enrollment at our university, so if the credits earned at the host university are recognized as graduation requirements, it is possible to graduate in four years, depending on the year of study abroad. Student exchange students (at their own expense) at partner universities are selected through a document review and interview, and then approved by the university.

MISEN Program

This is a study abroad program at a member university of MISEN (Methodist International Student Exchange Network), which our university is a member of. As with exchange programs at partner universities, the period of study abroad is counted toward the period of enrollment at our university, tuition fees are waived at the study abroad institution, and the program is eligible for continued course enrollment and credit transfer. This program is only available to undergraduate students.

ACUCA SMS Program

This is a study abroad program under the Student Mobility Scheme to member universities of ACUCA (Association of Christian Universities and Colleges in Asia), of which our university is a member. As with exchange programs to partner universities, the period of study abroad is counted toward the period of enrollment at our university, tuition fees are waived at the host university, and students are eligible for the continuous course enrollment system and credit transfer system. This program is for undergraduate students, and the study abroad period is only a semester.
