Group VI includes courses related to qualifications for social education director, librarian, curator, and social researcher.

Five specialized areas of study and a curriculum system that fosters practical knowledge

Five courses are designed to address issues related to local communities and people.
Each program offers a variety of elective courses to help solve local problems
The aim is to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills.
In addition, in addition to the compulsory subjects, students will deepen their learning by taking regional training and seminar courses that deal with practical content, building on the undergraduate foundation subjects and research understanding subjects.

Department of Community Studies Department

Group 0's compulsory undergraduate courses consist of four undergraduate foundation courses offered in lecture format, three research comprehension courses to teach research methods, two local field training courses, and eight practical courses that build on the foundation courses and research comprehension courses.

The undergraduate foundation subjects are designed to deepen students' fundamental understanding of communities and human beings, and provide them with the knowledge that will form the basis of their studies at this faculty.
The Research Understanding course allows students to learn social survey methods, which are the basic research methods of our faculty, in a gradual and systematic manner.
The local field training course provides students with hands-on experience in local activities.
Seminar courses are offered at all stages of the students' years, from the first to the fourth, and instruction is provided in small classes.

Groups I to V are comprised of subjects that divide issues related to local communities and the people who live there into five categories and allow students to deepen their understanding of each of these issues.

Group VI comprises subjects required for qualifications that can be acquired at this faculty that contribute to the development of specialist skills that do not fall within groups 0 to 5.

COURSE FEATURES Features of major courses

STUDY PROGRAM.01
Children and Youth Activity Support Program

Students will learn the basics of activities for children and young people in the local community, including their growth and development, as well as the knowledge and skills required to support such activities.

Main Subjects
Children's Activity Support Principles
With support from adults and society in the home and local community, children grow and develop as individuals and as members of society, build relationships, and begin to participate in various activities. In this course, using materials and data such as official statistics and survey reports, students will learn about children's growth, development, and activities, as well as the state of support from adults and society, deepening their understanding of the characteristics and issues involved, and acquiring the ability to explore ways to solve these issues.
Early Childhood Education Support Theory
We will consider issues, future directions and measures regarding support for early childhood educators such as Kindergarten Building teachers, nursery teachers and daycare teachers, including support for early childhood education stakeholders and organizations, and environmental improvements by the national and local governments.

STUDY PROGRAM.02
Women's Activities Support Program

Students will learn the basics of women's activities in the local community, including their lifestyles and participation in society, as well as the knowledge and skills required to support those activities.

Main Subjects
Home Education Support Theory
The need for local support for home education is being discussed due to concerns about the decline in educational ability in the home and parental anxiety about childcare. In this course, we will touch upon the characteristics of home education and explore the best ways to provide support in a society and home that is undergoing major changes, such as an increase in single-person households, a declining birthrate and an aging society, and an increase in working mothers and non-regular workers.
Community, Family and Childrearing
We will focus on the local community as a place where preschool children grow up and where children are raised, and deepen our understanding of the issues that local communities and families face through a variety of practical examples. In Japan, Kindergarten Building and daycare centers are the most common places for preschool children to spend time, but in this class we will look at unlicensed and outdoor childcare, and understand the issues that local communities and families face in the background.

STUDY PROGRAM.03
Community Activities Support Program

Students will learn the basics of community sports, social welfare, volunteer activities, and other activities related to the activities of various people (including the elderly and people with disabilities) in the local community, as well as the knowledge and skills to support their daily and professional activities.

Main Subjects
Community Activity Support Theory
This course will analyze the problems surrounding local communities from the perspective of people who live in the community, and will consider the meaning and potential of voluntary and collective activities by people involved in community development, as well as the various issues that accompany these activities. It will then consider the idea of "supporting" community-based activities, specific measures and mechanisms, and the roles and functions of the respective supporting bodies (government and private).
Sociology of the Community and Educational Profession
A profession is one that requires highly specialized knowledge and skills to perform its duties and has autonomy in its work. Recruiting (training and employing) excellent human resources for professions and improving their quality are important issues for the functional operation of local communities. In this class, we will learn about education professions (school teachers) as the main example.

STUDY PROGRAM.04
Community Resource Inheritance Program

Students will gain an understanding of the cultural assets and information resources of the local community and the social institutions that handle them (museums, libraries, archives, etc.), and will learn the knowledge and skills necessary for passing them on to future generations and communicating and utilizing them in the contemporary era.

Main Subjects
Introduction to community information inheritance
The purpose of this course is to provide a broad study of the basics of the phenomenon of information inheritance in communities. In particular, students will gain a deeper understanding of the history, philosophy, systems, and roles of social institutions such as libraries and archives that are established for the purpose of information inheritance. Students will also focus on the types and characteristics of the information content handled by such institutions, the significance and principles of the methods they apply, and the media they use.
Introduction to Community Cultural Resources
Cultural resources owned by local communities are important to them, as they help to create community unity, promote the local community, and shape people's identities. Here, we will focus on museum materials as representative of local cultural resources, and explain theories and methods for their collection, organization, storage, etc.

STUDY PROGRAM.05
Community Creation Planning Program

Students will learn the knowledge and skills necessary to develop practical plans for creating a richer local community, after understanding various ideas and principles and the systems that make up local communities.

Main Subjects
Community Creation Planning
Japan's regions, especially those considered "rural" regions, are facing multiple difficult problems such as economic stagnation and population decline. To address these issues, local governments have a history of formulating plans and managing their regions. In this class, we will overview the current problems facing Japan's regions, and then consider three types of plans formulated by the regions, including 1) urban planning, 2) comprehensive planning, and 3) the regional version of "comprehensive strategies," and think about how to design regions.
Principles of Regional Coexistence
Today, America is often thought of as a "country of immigrants" and a "multicultural society," but in the shadows of its history lies settler colonialism, racism, xenophobia, discrimination against women, and the oppression of sexual minorities. Taking up the experience of the United States, which has always faced "diversity," as an example, we will explore ways in which we can coexist in our communities while accepting various differences.
