Educational and research objectives and three policies

We would like to introduce the educational and research objectives, educational policy, and three policies of the Graduate Graduate School of Literature Department of Comparative Arts, Aoyama Gakuin University Graduate School.

Educational and research objectives

In accordance with the founding principles of our university and based on the establishment of humanistic "knowledge" that is a part of Graduate School of Literature, Department of Comparative Arts aims to train individuals who will contribute to the advancement of culture by enriching their comparative arts education and international perspective across the three artistic fields of fine arts, music, theater, and film. In the Master's program, students will acquire specialized knowledge of the true meaning of art, history, and philosophy, as well as the ability to write a research paper as a researcher through specialized and interdisciplinary comparative research and exercises, and in the Doctoral program, students will add their own unique knowledge to their specialized field and pave the way as specialist researchers in the three artistic fields mentioned above, as well as be able to contribute professionally to various issues facing modern society, such as welfare, the environment, and information.

Three Policies for the Master's Program

  • Diploma Policy (Policy for Completion Certification and Awarding of Degrees)

    ■ Knowledge and skills
    Students understand the academic procedures for studying classical art fields (art, music, theater, and film), discover problems on their own, and acquire advanced specialized knowledge and methods for solving them. Furthermore, they have acquired comparative art education and an international perspective based on a rich knowledge of the original meaning of art and its history and philosophy.

    ■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
    Based on specialized and interdisciplinary comparative research in various fields of classical arts (fine arts, music, theater, and film), students will acquire historical and critical thinking skills and be able to logically express the content of their research in writings such as master's thesis.

    ■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
    Having acquired a broad perspective in the fields of classical arts (fine arts, music, theater, and film), students are motivated to utilize their specialized and interdisciplinary comparative research methods, hone their skills and expressive abilities, and fully utilize their deep knowledge and abilities in arts and culture in society.

  • Curriculum Policy (Policy for creating and implementing educational courses)

    ■ Knowledge and skills
    Students will study the various fields of fine arts, music, theater, and film across disciplines, acquiring historical and specialized knowledge, and then delve deeper into the artistic fields of their own specialization. Furthermore, they will develop an interdisciplinary and international perspective through comparative research with the humanities (literature, religion, philosophy, history, folklore, cultural anthropology, etc.).

    ■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
    Through specialized and interdisciplinary comparative research and exercises (original text readings, research presentations, discussions) in the three artistic fields of fine arts, namely art, music, theater, and film, students will deepen their specialized knowledge, acquire historical and critical thinking skills, and develop the ability to widely publish the results of their research in the form of research papers.

    ■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
    By acquiring comparative arts education and enriching international perspectives, students will be able to contribute academically as specialist researchers in the three artistic fields of fine art, music, and theater/film, and they will also be able to use their knowledge of arts and culture to contribute to various issues facing modern society, such as welfare, the environment, and information.

  • Admission Policy

    ■ Knowledge and skills
    - Possesses specialized knowledge equivalent to a university graduate regarding issues in the fields of art history, musicology, and theater and film studies.
    - Possesses the ability to read and analyze the languages required in the field of specialization, as well as related history and materials.

    ■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
    In research papers (graduation thesis, etc.), students will be able to logically express their knowledge and interests in the fields of classical arts (fine arts, music, theater, and film).

    ■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
    Students will have an inquisitive mind about the classical arts of Japan, the East and the West, and will improve their individual qualities through research. They will also have the desire to understand people with different cultural backgrounds and life experiences, and to collaborate with these people to contribute to the advancement of society and the arts and culture.

Three Policies for the Doctoral Program

  • Diploma Policy (Policy for Completion Certification and Awarding of Degrees)

    ■ Knowledge and skills
    Based on the establishment of humanistic "knowledge," students acquire specialist knowledge of the true meaning of art, history, and philosophy through comparative art education and an international perspective, as well as the ability to write papers as researchers.

    ■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
    Students will gain a deep understanding of the research situation, and based on specialized and interdisciplinary comparative research in various fields of classical arts (fine arts, music, theater, and film), will acquire historical and critical thinking skills and be able to publish original research results in the form of a doctoral dissertation.

    ■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
    Students will have acquired an international and interdisciplinary perspective in the fields of classical arts (fine arts, music, theater, and film), and will be motivated to explore new issues, research methods, and knowledge, and to contribute academically as specialist researchers in their respective academic fields.

  • Curriculum Policy (Policy for creating and implementing educational courses)

    ■ Knowledge and skills
    Based on a foundation of humanities knowledge, students will study across disciplines through lectures in the specialized fields of art, music, theater, and film. After acquiring historical and philosophical knowledge, students will delve deeper into the artistic fields in their own specialization, nurturing highly specialized knowledge and an interdisciplinary international perspective.

    ■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
    Through specialized and interdisciplinary comparative research and exercises (original text readings, research presentations, discussions, etc.) in the three artistic fields of visual arts, music, theater, and film, students will deepen their specialized knowledge, acquire research methods and historical and critical thinking skills, and develop the ability to publish the results of their research in the form of a doctoral dissertation.

    ■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
    Based on the advanced specialist knowledge and historical and critical thinking acquired through specialist and interdisciplinary comparative research and seminars on various arts, students will pursue their own research using original methods and publish the results in the form of a paper, cultivating a proactive attitude to open up new perspectives and present new findings to the world.

    Students will have specialized knowledge equivalent to that of a master's degree in issues related to the fields of art history, musicology, and theater and film studies, and will have the ability to read and analyze the language, related history, and materials required in their field of specialization.

    ■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
    In a research paper (such as a master's thesis), you will be able to logically express your knowledge and interests in the fields of classical arts (fine arts, music, theater, and film).

    ■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
    Students will have an inquisitive mind about the classical arts of Japan, the East and the West, and will be motivated to improve their individual qualities through research, while also deepening their understanding of the changing world situation, culture, and human beings and society, and to advance research in their field of specialization.
