International Politics
International Politics
The goal of Department of International Politics is to equip students with the ability to grasp international politics theoretically, analyze it empirically, and find practical solutions to international problems.
Master's Program
Department of International Politics consists of the Security Course and the Global Governance Course. The Security Course is a program that specializes in the study of "security" within international politics, with issues of war, peace, and security as its main research subject. The Global Governance Course goes beyond the traditional framework of international politics centered on sovereignty and seeks to understand issues of inter-state cooperation and systems, relations between markets and states, and international order from a global perspective. Regional studies and diplomatic history are also offered as major courses in this department, and these are subjects related to both security and global governance.
Both courses have two subject groups: Group A, which consists of basic courses in international politics, and Group B, which consists of specialized courses in each field of international politics. Group A is common to both courses and includes basic courses in the main fields of international relations, such as international politics, political theory, social science methodology, international security theory, diplomatic history, and political economy. Group B of the Security Course has specialized courses necessary for studying issues of peace and security, and students can specialize in international security policy, political and diplomatic history, strategic studies, intelligence, civil-military relations, new areas of security (cyber, etc.), and international peace activities. Group B of the Global Governance Course offers theoretical courses in the field of international politics, such as global governance theory and international institutional theory (regime theory), administrative subjects such as international human rights law, international administration, international NGO theory, and UN studies, as well as courses from other majors. Students from Department of International Economics can take courses such as international public policy and environmental economics, and students from Department of International Communication can take courses such as intercultural ethics. Regional studies courses such as American politics and diplomacy, Russian politics and diplomacy, and Chinese politics and diplomacy are major subjects common to both the international security and global governance courses. Contemporary issues such as human security and peacebuilding can also be approached from both perspectives. In addition, several special courses in international politics are offered in Group B, which pave the way to cutting-edge research in international politics.
Department of International Politics is prepared for those who aim to become researchers in various fields of international politics, as well as for graduate students who wish to pursue practical careers in international organizations or government agencies, and offers systematic training from the basics of international politics to specialized fields. In addition, courses are offered by practitioners. In the past, this graduate school has produced many international politics researchers, area researchers, and practitioners.
This major particularly encourages working professionals to enroll for career advancement and academic return. It aims to provide practitioners with an opportunity to return to international political theory and methodologies for policy and phenomenon analysis, which they can use to advance their careers, while also contributing to reflecting a practical perspective in international political studies.
Doctoral Program
A doctoral program is available for those who wish to devote themselves to research at this graduate school after completing their master's degree. The doctoral program is a more advanced and specialized program primarily aimed at training researchers. To date, 19 students have earned doctorates from this graduate school's Department of International Politics, and they have gone on to teach or work in research positions at universities and other institutions.
