Studying "culture" in this graduate school may offer an intellectual experience somewhat different from traditional academic fields. Unlike disciplines such as philosophy and economics, which have long histories and institutional frameworks, the term "cultural studies" is not necessarily firmly established as a systematized, independent academic field. However, this does not mean that the study of "culture" is positioned on the periphery of existing academic disciplines.
Questions surrounding "culture" often deeply intersect with diverse areas of concern, including society, politics, and economics. Therefore, considering "culture" is not merely an analysis of individual phenomena, but rather an endeavor to fundamentally re-examine the very nature of society and to re-examine it in a "comprehensive" manner.
Based on this perspective, our graduate school emphasizes research that flexibly transcends the boundaries of academic disciplines while drawing on insights from various fields, thereby opening up new horizons of knowledge. Rather than resting on established academic systems, we hope that our students will approach their research with an attitude of sometimes questioning and challenging them, and discovering new perspectives.
