Educational and research objectives and three policies

We would like to introduce the educational and research objectives, educational policy, and three policies of Aoyama Gakuin University Graduate School Graduate School of Literature Department of English and American Literature.

Educational and research objectives

Department of English and American Literature aims to develop talented individuals who can contribute to society and the international community by conducting contemporary and historical specialized research on the languages and literatures of the English-speaking world and acquiring the traditional culture and critical spirit of the humanities. Throughout the doctoral program, we aim to train specialized researchers who are oriented toward research at an international level, while at the same time training talented individuals who can contribute to high-level English education in various aspects of Japan.

Three Policies for the Master's Program

  • Diploma Policy (Policy for Completion Certification and Awarding of Degrees)

    ■ Knowledge and skills
    Students have acquired the advanced English language proficiency necessary to conduct specialized research on language, literature, culture, and communication in English-speaking countries, as well as English language pedagogy.
    They have extensive knowledge in their specialized fields, namely English literature, American literature, English linguistics, communication, and English language pedagogy.

    ■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
    Able to identify problems related to language, literature, culture, and communication in English-speaking countries, as well as English language pedagogy, derive solutions to those problems through academic procedures, and express the results in English, or to conduct alternative research on such issues.

    ■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
    They will actively absorb knowledge of English-speaking languages, literature, culture, and communication, as well as English language pedagogy, and will be able to take a deep interest in current issues and produce research results with an academically unbiased attitude in the pursuit of the truth.

  • Curriculum Policy (Policy for creating and implementing educational courses)

    Department of English and American Literature has organized the following curriculum to enable students to conduct academically advanced research on English-speaking languages, literature, culture, communication, and English language education. First, in terms of knowledge and skills, students will acquire basic knowledge and skills in their specialized fields through basic exercises. Furthermore, in terms of thinking, judgment, and expression, students will deepen their knowledge of English-speaking languages, literature, culture, communication, and English language education through lectures and exercises, and will be able to think for themselves, discover problems, derive solutions, and complete the results as a master's thesis, or conduct research on a topic that replaces it. In terms of motivation, interest, and attitude, students will be able to actively absorb knowledge of English-speaking languages, literature, culture, communication, and English language education under the guidance of their supervisor, take a deep interest in current issues, and pursue research with an academically unbiased attitude in search of the truth.

  • Admission Policy

    ■ Knowledge and skills
    Students will conduct contemporary and historical research on language, literature, culture, and communication in English-speaking countries, as well as English language pedagogy, and will have the desire to contribute to society by acquiring the traditional liberal arts and critical spirit of the humanities, as well as to contribute to the international community.
    Students have the basic academic ability and ability to operate academic procedures necessary to conduct contemporary and historical research on English-speaking language, literature, culture, and communication, as well as English language pedagogy.

    ■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
    Able to express in English their thoughts and knowledge about English-speaking language, literature, culture, and communication, as well as English language pedagogy.

    ■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
    Through research into English language, literature, culture, and communication, as well as English language education, students have the desire to contribute to society by encouraging coexistence with people from around the world who have different lifestyles, cultures, values, and ways of thinking, and are willing to give back to society through their learning.

Three Policies for the Doctoral Program

  • Diploma Policy (Policy for Completion Certification and Awarding of Degrees)

    ■ Knowledge and skills
    Students have acquired a highly advanced command of English necessary for conducting specialized research on language, literature, culture, and communication in English-speaking countries, as well as English language pedagogy.
    They will have acquired broader and deeper knowledge in their specialized fields, namely English literature, American literature, English linguistics, communication, and English language pedagogy, and will be capable of conducting cutting-edge research both in Japan and abroad.

    ■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
    They have the ability to write doctoral dissertations and, as independent researchers, identify problems, solve them using unprecedented methods and techniques, and open up new research horizons.

    ■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
    They will actively absorb knowledge of English-speaking languages, literature, culture, and communication, as well as English language pedagogy, have a deep interest in current issues, and be able to produce research results with an academically unbiased attitude in the pursuit of truth, which will put them at the forefront of research both in Japan and abroad.

  • Curriculum Policy (Policy for creating and implementing educational courses)

    There is no yearly allocation of specialized subjects, and subjects are arranged flexibly to meet the interests of students and to allow them to take a balanced course. This course, which offers subjects such as English literature, American literature, English linguistics, communication, and English language education, places emphasis on broadening knowledge and enhancing expertise, based on the goal of "fostering research ability or even higher level specialized ability in the major field." Under the guidance of a supervisor, students will hone their theoretical and practical skills through individual instruction, while critically examining cutting-edge research in English-speaking languages, literature, culture, and communication, as well as English language education and related fields, with the aim of writing a doctoral thesis.

    Students will conduct contemporary and historical research on language, literature, culture, and communication in English-speaking countries, as well as English language pedagogy, and will contribute to society by acquiring the traditional liberal arts and critical spirit of the humanities, while also possessing a high level of English proficiency that will enable them to contribute to the international community.
    Possess the specialized academic ability and ability to operate academic procedures necessary to conduct contemporary and historical research on language, literature, culture, and communication in English-speaking countries, as well as English language pedagogy.
    Have knowledge of a foreign language (German, French, or Spanish) necessary for research on language, literature, culture, and communication in English-speaking countries, and English language pedagogy.

    ■Thinking ability, judgment ability, expressive ability
    They will also have a high level of English proficiency and be able to express in English their interest in language, literature, culture, and communication in English-speaking countries, as well as English language pedagogy, and their own thoughts and judgments.

    ■ Motivation, interest, and attitude
    Through research into English language, literature, culture, and communication, as well as English language education, students have the desire to contribute to society by encouraging coexistence with people from around the world who have different lifestyles, cultures, values, and ways of thinking; they are willing to give back to society through their learning and contribute to the progress of academia.
