Expansion and sophistication of internships in the Tokyo metropolitan area

Expansion and sophistication of internships in the Tokyo metropolitan area

Business Overview

This project is an effort to expand internships by 16 universities* located in the Tokyo metropolitan area in collaboration with nine organizations** that match students with internships.

By promoting and establishing internships and other programs throughout the region and enhancing career education, we aim to ensure a smooth transition to postponing job-hunting and recruitment activities for students scheduled to graduate or complete their studies after 2015.

Specifically, the 16 universities will work under the umbrella of the Metropolitan Internship Promotion Organization***, which includes nine other organizations, to concretely forge collaborations with industry and carry out activities that make use of the purpose of this project over the course of 2014 and 2015.

In the "Improvement of education in response to the needs of industry at universities located in the Tokyo metropolitan area" initiative that has been promoted since 2012 (Improvement of education in response to the needs of industry and the establishment of an enrichment system [Theme A] "Improvement of education in response to the needs of industry at universities located in the Tokyo metropolitan area"), each university has already expanded its internship and other initiatives. Based on these results, the "Expansion and sophistication of internships in the Tokyo metropolitan area," which is a collaboration between 16 universities, will focus on developing the following two types of internships, in addition to the internships that have been provided so far, mainly at large companies.

  • 01.Internships etc. for small and medium-sized enterprises
  • 02. Internships and other programs aimed at cultivating professional consciousness

The “Internships, etc. for medium-sized enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises” in (1) is planned to be developed by utilizing the results of Theme 1 (Understanding the needs of industry = the needs of manufacturing SMEs) and Theme 4 (Developing human resource development programs in collaboration with industry = event sales-type internships, etc.) of the “Improvement of education in response to the needs of industry at universities located in the Tokyo metropolitan area” project [Theme A] under the FY2012 Education Improvement and Enhancement System Establishment Project in response to the needs of industry.

(2) “Internships and other programs aimed at cultivating a career consciousness” is planned to be developed in response to the importance of cultivating a career consciousness from an early age, which was pointed out in the review of Theme 4 of the (Theme A) projects to meet industry needs.

As for internships for third-year students and large companies, we will strive to further develop what has been implemented so far by each partner university.

In order to expand internships, there are a number of issues that need to be resolved in the future, including the development of an internship model that is suited to the two types that this initiative aims to develop, the development of pre- and post-internship training programs, the development of internship evaluation and measurement methods, and the development of a specialized human resources development program for internships.

By resolving these issues during the implementation period from 2014 to 2015, it is expected that the project will enhance its function as a collaborative network between universities and industry, and further contribute to the expansion of internships in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Project implementation structure

Collaboration with support organizations for internships and other programs and with industry in this project will be carried out through the following structure.

  • Established the Metropolitan Internship Promotion Organization as a regional internship promotion organization.
  • Establish an administrative office within the organization to operate the "Capital Area Internship Promotion Organization"
  • Inviting internship support groups to participate in the Metropolitan Internship Promotion Organization

We will particularly encourage the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises in the Tokyo metropolitan area. This will allow students to broaden their horizons to small and medium-sized enterprises before they begin job hunting, and will facilitate a smooth transition to a delayed job hunting period.
