TITLE

UNU Rector Dr. Chiritsi Marwala, UNU Senior Vice-Rector (UN Assistant Secretary-General) Dr. Shirahase Sawako, and Chief of Staff Michael Baldock pay a courtesy visit to Tohoku University

On Wednesday, January 31, 2024, United Nations University President Marwala Chilitsi, United Nations University Senior Vice President Sawako Shirahase (Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations), and Chief of Staff Michael Baldock paid a courtesy visit to President INAZUMI Hiroshige of our university, who assumed office in December of last year.

The United Nations University headquarters is located across Aoyama Street from Main Gate our Aoyama campus, and we have been collaborating with them for some time, including co-hosting symposiums and conducting joint research.
In a friendly atmosphere, they discussed further developments in education and research, as well as collaborative efforts.

He assumed the position of President of the United Nations University on March 1, 2023. He is the seventh President and the first from Africa, an expert in AI (artificial intelligence), and holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge in the UK. He has previously served as Vice President of the University of Johannesburg in South Africa. He has served as a visiting researcher and visiting professor in the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and South Africa, and has participated in various global and national policy organizations, collaborating with UN agencies such as UNESCO, UNICEF, WHO, and WIPO.

Sawako Shirahase Senior Vice President, United Nations University (Assistant Secretary-General)
Professor of Sociology, Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, The University of Tokyo. After receiving a doctorate in sociology from University of Oxford, he joined the University of Tokyo as an assistant professor and became a professor in the Department of Sociology in 2010. In 2018, he served as Vice President of Tokyo University, and then as Trustee Vice President (International and President's Vision Public Relations) of the same university for 2 years from the following year, 2019. He is currently the director of the Center for Contemporary Japanese Studies at the University of Tokyo. His research focuses on social stratification, population sociology, and changes in the family and social institutions.
