The 238 wooden outdoor benches on Aoyama campus were 20 years old and the seats were severely deteriorated. Only the wooden parts of the bench seats were decaying, while the metal bases were still reusable. Therefore, instead of replacing the benches, we decided to repair them using liquid glass coating, which is used for wooden buildings.

Liquid glass coating can regenerate and preserve decaying wooden parts. By utilizing this property, this wooden outdoor bench replacement project allowed us to reuse the benches instead of buying new ones, and the repairs were completed at approximately 70% of the cost of buying new ones.

As a result, we were able to achieve two of the 12th goals of the SDGs (Responsible Consumption and Production): 12-2 (By 2030, sustainably manage and use natural resources efficiently) and 12-5 (By 2030, significantly reduce waste by preventing, reducing, recycling, and reusing).

Our university will contribute to the SDGs through recycling and reuse.
